Royal Palm Turkey Feathers

Lydia's "girlie", our Royal Palm Turkey we hatched this spring,  has been cracking us up all day as she reacts in an rather unorthodox manner to my husband the hunter's new iPod Touch application that plays various turkey calls.  She has taught us several things today. When her reaction to the "calls" caused her to strut like a tom, we thought maybe she was actually a he. I did some Swagbuckling and learned that when confronted a hen turkey will strut! Left wondering if she was a he, I continued to research and learned that the scat between a tom and a hen are shaped differently! (Sorry, the home educator in me finds that fascinating :D  ) Males are "J" shaped, and females are "S" shaped.  "Girlie" had a few detectives following  it for a little while and the mystery was finally solved.  Girlie is able to retain her name - she is indeed a girl!

Once again great pictures.

I am terrified of turkeys...goes back to my childhood days and being chased.

cool! One of the things I love best about SS is what I learn as well as what I see. Excellent closeup on that feather, such delicate colors!

Good job!

Really Bonnie?? I'm so sorry to hear that! It really surprises me! Wonder if you had an encounter with a rogue turkey, because our turkeys are the sweetest birds we've had so far. Girlie will let Lydia pick her up and carry her around like a baby. I suppose the big fellows are terribly curious and do follow us around and their boldness could be confused with aggression to a child.

lol nice story, love that first shot's lines. I confess the only turkeys I've seen are frozen ones in the supermarket, but she is one amazing turkey to look at, very majestic in that last shot ! Great blurring of background and backlighting.

I've also never seen turkey up close and personal - the closest would be a wild turkey on the roadside. They are not nearly as handsome as yours, though.

Girlie is precious! People often say roosters can be mean, but ours are very friendly because we've handled them from a very early age and enjoy our company.

We've not raised any turkeys, so I appreciate the educational story!

Nice shots, I have the turkey call app too. Waiting to run across something that might react to it. My dogs just look at me like I'm crazy.
